Welcome to our SOCI 391 Wiki space! Students in the Sociology of Gendered Lives class are developing topics of interest for them and hopefully for you too.
Women are not a monolithic group. So as a sociology instructor of gender I open up this wiki for my students to research and share their gender issues. I understand that because of the intersectionality of one's life and the social contexts of our experiences, we each have issues of importance or personal concern.
Intersectionality (or intersectionalism) (from Wikipedia)is the study of intersections between forms or systems of oppression, domination or discrimination. In the blog Social Justice 101: Intersectionality, the blogger writes: Intersectionality is the idea that all of our kinds of privilege interact. Intersectionality is about understanding that we exist in a variety of different systems, and sometimes one system is acting on us more strongly than another. Intersectionality asks us to examine what privileges we may be using at any given time, and how that interacts with our oppressions, as well as how it can create unique forms of oppression for other individuals.
